Absolutely all ‘Haikyuu!!’ seasons, OVAs, & movies are connected, and the best way to watch the franchise is in release date order. You can technically watch only the anime series without movies and OVAs, but OVAs often provide additional content, such as side stories, character backgrounds, or extra matches that may not be covered in the main seasons, so it’s recommended you watch everything if you want to dig deep into the storyline overall.
The movies are just a recap of the previous seasons, so it’s best to watch them after you’ve watched the season, and they don’t have any special place in the chronological timeline.
‘Haikyuu!!’ chronological watch order
I briefly mentioned all the ‘Haikyuu!!’ seasons, OVAs, and the movies in a simple chronological order. Now it’s time to go through the brief storyline so that you may know why this show is worth every second of your time.
1. ‘Haikyuu!!’ Season 1 (2014)
After catching a national championship volleyball match on TV, Hinata is inspired to pursue the sport passionately. Determined to become a champion himself, he joined his school’s volleyball club. Unfortunately, in their first competition, they face his favorite team, Kitagawa Daichi, and lose. Despite the setback, Hinata remains hopeful.
2. ‘Hiakyuu!!: Arrival of Lev’ (OVA) (2014)
Nekoma High School’s volleyball team welcomes a new player, Lev Haiba, who is of Japanese and Russian descent. Despite having the ideal height for volleyball, Lev struggles with fundamental techniques, posing a challenge for Kenma Kozume, the team setter, to sync with him.
3. ‘Haikyuu!! Movie 1: Owen to Hijimari’ (2015)
Hinata Shoyo, inspired by a volleyball competition on TV, developed a sudden passion for the sport. Following a defeat against Kitagawa Daiichi Junior High and their impressive setter Kageyama Tobio, Hinata vows to beat him in their next encounter. However, fate takes an unexpected turn when Kageyama joins the same high school as Hinata.
4. ‘Haikyuu!! Movie 2: Shousha to Haisha’ (2015)
Karasuno High Volleyball team enters the Inter-High Volleyball Preliminaries, quickly earning the label of “fallen champions.” Their first challenge is against Date Tech High, known for its formidable Iron Wall. Karasuno’s ace, Asahi, struggles against this defensive tactic, but they manage to find a way to break through the Iron Wall’s defenses. Now, Karasuno must face Aoba Johsai High in their quest for victory.
5. ‘Haikyuu!!’ Season 2 (2016)
Karasuno’s volleyball team receives an invitation from Nekoma High to join a training camp, where top teams like f*ckurodani, Shinzen, Nekoma, and Ubugawa gather. The teams engage in intense practice sessions, aiming to refine their skills for the upcoming Spring nationals.
6. ‘Haikyuu!!: Falling grades’ (OVA) (2016)
Hinata and Kageyama face a setback as their grades drop, leading to a failed test. To make amends, they are required to take make-up exams, creating a conflict as the exams coincide with their training schedule. This situation poses a challenge, as they must balance the need to pass the exams while also striving to excel in their training.
7. ‘Haikyuu!!’: Season 3 (Karasuno High vs. Shiratorizawa High) (2016)
Following Karasuno High’s triumph over Aoba Jousai High, the team secures its spot in the fiercely competitive Spring tournament. The ultimate hurdle to reach the nationals is overcoming Shiratorizawa High, with their formidable ace, Ushijima, ranking among Tokyo’s top three aces.
8. ‘Haikyuu!! Betting on the Spring High Volleyball’ (OVA) (2017)
In a discussion between two newscasters, the focus is on high school volleyball and the approaching Spring Inter-high. They highlight the conclusion of the recent qualifier rounds in Miyagi and proceed to introduce key players from various volleyball teams participating in the event.
9. ‘Haikyuu!! Movie 3: Sainou to Sense’ (2017)
The movie primarily revolves around the competition between Karasuno High and Aoba Johsai High. It focuses on the new techniques and skills that Karasuno develops to defeat Aoba High in the game. Additionally, the film highlights the obstacles and challenges faced by the Karasuno High volleyball team as they strive to overcome the opposing team and secure a spot in the nationals.
10. ‘Haikyuu!! Movie 4: Concept no Tatakai’ (2017)
The movie centers around the Karasuno High Volleyball team’s triumph over Aoba Johsai, leading them to the final match against powerhouse Shiratorizawa Academy. Shiratorizawa boasts a champion ace, making them formidable opponents. Kageyama puts forth his best effort to strategize and exploit Shiratorizawa’s weaknesses in an attempt to level the playing field.
11. ‘Haikyuu!! To the top’ (Season 4 Part 1) (2020)
Following their victory against Shiratorizawa High, the Karasuno High volleyball team secured a coveted spot in the nationals. Kageyama earns an invitation to the All-Japan Youth Training program, while Kei participates in a prestigious rookie training program. This leaves Hinata feeling left out.
12. ‘Haikyuu!! Land vs. Sky’ (OVA) (2020)
In the national volleyball competition, an intense battle unfolds for the three available spots. Nekoma High School, Nohebi Academy, Itachiyama Academy, and f*ckurodani High School all exert maximum effort to secure a position in the nationals. The ultimate outcome hinges on the results of the Tokyo Qualifiers, determining which team emerges triumphant and earns the chance to compete in the national competition.
13. ‘Haikyuu!! The Path of the Ball’ (OVA) (2020)
Facing elimination after their defeat to f*ckurodani, Nekoma’s final opportunity in the competition lies in a must-win match against Nohebi. However, Nohebi resorts to underhanded tactics to gain an advantage. As the game unfolds, Nohebi encounters a setback when one of their key players sustains a mid-game injury, placing the burden on the remaining team members to compensate for the loss.
14. ‘Haikyuu!! To the top’ (Season 4 Part 2)(2020)
Karasuno High qualifies for the nationals and faces Tsubakihara Academy in their first match. The challenge escalates as Kageyama finds dealing with the Miro brothers demanding. The match becomes intense with fervent cheers and jeers from both sets of fans. Kageyama draws inspiration from the attack against Hinata, adding driving power. As the game progresses, Karasuno faces a vigorous battle against Inarizaki High.

The first two seasons of ‘Haikyuu!!’ can be watched on Crunchyroll, with the third season also being available on AppleTV. Fourth and the latest season of ‘Haikyuu!!’ is available on Crunchyroll. Will there be more seasons of ‘Haikyuu!!’?
There won’t be a Season 5 of ‘Haikyuu!!‘. Instead, the story concludes with two movies announced in August 2022. The first, “Haikyuu!!: Land vs. Sky,” and the second, “Haikyuu!!: The Final Battle,” are expected to be released in 2024. These movies will wrap up the remaining storyline, focusing on Shoyo Hinata and his team’s journey as they vie for victory in their last matches, aiming to become the top high school volleyball team in Japan.
