Anchuca Historic Mansion Tour Home

Anchuca Historic mansion Tour Home (circa 1830) is open for tours from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.

Joseph E. Davis, patriarchal brother to President Jefferson Davis, CSA, and owner of the magnificent Warren Co. plantation, Hurricane, died here in 1870. Most notably the balcony was the site where Jefferson Davis greeted neighbors and friends while visiting his brother in 1869. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Open daily from 9:30 am-4:00 pm.

Anshe Chesed Cemetery

Anshe Chesed Jewish Cemetery

Evidence of a once robust Jewish community, the cemetery dates back to 1864. A lunette fortification was built on the property by the Confederacy. On May 19 and 22, 1863, it was the site of fierce fighting and bloodshed. In 1864, the property was sold to the Anshe Chesed Congregation. Located at Clay Street at National Military park. The Attic Gallery is the oldest independent art gallery in the state of Mississippi. Bazsinsky House Bed and Breakfast

Two conflicting stories, one a 53-page handwritten family history, the other a researched account of documented events, address the property from as early as 1840. Both conclude that the structure, built by Joseph Bazsinsky as a town house, remained a home for his large Jewish family through four generations until early in the twenty-first century. The first African Methodist Episcopal Church in Mississippi and the first Masonic Lodge in Mississippi were organized here in 1875. In 1890, Campbell College, the first African American College in Mississippi established without the aid of whites, operated out of a building behind Bethel. Clear Creek Golf Club

The 18-hole “Clear Creek” course at the Clear Creek Golf Course facility in Vicksburg, Mississippi features 6,601 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 71.8 and it has a slope rating of 118 on Bermuda grass. Designed by Watermark Golf LLC/Nathan Crace, the Clear Creek golf course opened in 1977.

Duff Green Mansion

The lovely 3-story Duff Green Mansion was constructed by skilled slave labor and was used as a hospital for Confederate and Union soldiers during the Civil War. Large ballroom available for private parties and receptions. Group tours available by appointment only.

Gold in the Hills at Parkside Playhouse

The show will begin at 7:30 pm on Friday and Saturday nights and 2:00 pm Sunday.at the Parkside Playhouse, 101 Iowa Avenue. Tickets: $15 adults/$10 seniors/ $10 13-19 years old and $8 children ages 12 & under. The show is set in the 1890s and features a relentless hero, a winsome heroine, a ruthless villain, and the wilder side of city life in the infamous New York Bowery.

Grey Oaks Plantation

Grey Oaks, originally built on the outskirts of Port Gibson in the Greek Revival style, was once called “Anchuka”. It was bought in 1938 by Michael Morrissey of Vicksburg. Under the supervision of architect James T. Canizaro of Jackson, the house was dismantled and all salvageable parts were used to rebuild the home in the Federal style and renamed Grey Oaks at its present location. The home is an elegant adaptation of an 1830s home. Surrounded by acres of landscaped grounds and towering oaks, and mountains of Kudzu, the house takes on the aura of a romance novel.

Oak Hall Tour Home

OakHallBnB – An Historic Home with a Modern Feel.

The Fannie Willis Johnson Home, built in 1910 in the Mission Revival style, was designed by New Orleans architects Keenan and Weiss and was supervised by local architect William Stanton. It was constructed in Norman brick and trimmed in Bedford limestone by Curphey and Mundy Builders for $30,000. The Mission Revival style originated in California and was based on 17th and 18th century Spanish colonial architecture. Characteristics of the style are the Mission-gabled portico, cartouches, carved blocks over the columns, and wide bracketed eaves. The home is lined in quarter sawn oak and boasts 32 custom stained glass windows and original beaux art lighting fixtures designed by Louis Millet, from the Chicago Art Institute. Millet was responsible for the stained glass art and interior design oversite of the State Capitol Building in Jackson and the Illinois Monument at the Vicksburg Military Park. Fannie Willis Johnson, a Vick descendant, is best known for her philanthropic contributions to individuals and the community, such as to build the Junius Ward Johnson Memorial Y.M.C.A. and a Y.M.C.A. for African Americans, to make improvements to the Salvation Army Home, the Vicksburg High School Athletic Field, for a new school in south Vicksburg, playgrounds in the city, and to build St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. For some years before her death, she maintained a home for aged Protestant ladies and, when she decided to use her home for the Old Ladies Home, she was willing to live in the Carriage House so she could see them enjoy her home.

Old Court House Museum (circa 1858-1860)

Still standing strong after more than a century and a half, the iconic structure housing Vicksburg’s Old Court House Museum originally served as the courthouse for Warren County. The stunning building has seen its fair share of history, too – aside from holding numerous well-known trials and suffering a Union shelling during the American Civil War, the courthouse was where Confederate President Jefferson Davis began his political career. This colorful background mirrors that of Vicksburg itself, making the museum a perfect complement to any trip to the area.

Old Depot Museum

Beyond the doors of the Old Vicksburg Depot lies a plethora of historical exhibits designed to educate and entertain. From the immersive diorama of the Siege of Vicksburg to original paintings depicting the trials of the war, this museum’s many features are sure to please both Civil War enthusiasts and casual visitors.

Pemberton’s Headquarters

Pemberton’s Headquarters is a residence that Confederate Lt. General John C. Pemberton occupied during the Siege of Vicksburg, led by Union Major General Ulysses S. Grant from May 23 to July 4, 1863. It was in this building that Pemberton held a council of his chief officers to discuss plans for surrender of the city.

Southern Cultural Heritage Center

Southern Cultural Heritage Center open Mo-Fr, 8:00 am-12:00 pm, 1:00 pm-5:00 pm; Closed two weeks during the Christmas holidays.

This cultural center tells the story of the Sisters of Mercy who for 132 years educated children and nursed the sick at Saint Francis Xavier Academy and Convent. Tours showcase: the Cobb House (circa 1830), the original school and hospital barracks during the Civil War; the Gothic Revival Convent (1868); the Italianate Auditorium (1885); and the 1937 Academy. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a Mississippi Landmark. Tours are by appointment only. Rates: $5/adults and $3/children and group discounts available.

Southern Heritage Air Museum

Open Wednesday – Saturday 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. Closed Thanksgiving through March 1st (tours by appointment).
Established by the Southern Heritage Air Foundation, the Southern Heritage Air Museum is dedicated to preserving the history of American aviation through an assortment of exhibits and a collection of real aircraft. The museum is located at the Vicksburg-Tallulah Regional Airport, just across the river from Vicksburg, Mississippi. The museum is also an affiliate of the World War II Museum in New Orleans.

USS Cairo Museum

Open Thursday – Sunday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm
Named in honor of the Illinois city, the USS Cairo was commissioned in January of 1862. This powerful, 13-gun ironclad vessel was one of a team of similar gunboats that were designed to help Union forces overcome Confederate opposition during the American Civil War. But the Cairo simply wasn’t destined to succeed in its mission – after less than a year in action, the boat was sunk by an electronically detonated torpedo just seven miles north of Vicksburg, Mississippi in the Yazoo River.

Vicksburg National Cemetery

Vicksburg National Cemetery located by the USS Cairo in the Vicksburg National Military Park. Vicksburg National Cemetery is the second largest national cemetery embracing 116 acres inside the Vicksburg National Military Park. It holds the remains of 17,000 Civil War Union soldiers, a number unmatched by any other national cemetery.

Robert Dafford’s 32 life-like pictorial murals depict periods of history in Vicksburg. Also featured is an abstract mural by Vicksburg artist Martha Ferris which was the first mural to be painted along the floodwall in 2001. In a lyrical and playful fashion, it recognizes three vital arteries feeding Vicksburg’s diversity: the river, the railroad, and the highway.
