Good evening,
Hey guys, I received my Boxster S transmission today. I was curious if anybody had any recommendations on cleaning the case. I used a Dremel on my 901 and it turned out beautiful. Any issues using a wire brush on the Boxster case. I know that might sound like a stupid question but don’t want to mess it up. After I get most of the heavy stuff I could try pressure wash and cleaning or something.Any input is appreciated… Thank you

For normal cleaning, we use a steam pressure washer. The steam melts off the oil and tar. If you want it to look pretty, it will need to be blasted with some sort of media or lots of manual labor.

On a side note, which Boxster S trans is the one that had that pop out in 2nd gear?

G86-20 . It is the same one you have. The G86-21 does not have that problem.

Don't have a 6 yet, but what is the difference between the two, like a particular year?

Redesign of the trans to prevent the issues with the 2nd gear popout.

You can tell the difference by the shift cable attachment points. On the G86-20 , the cables connect to the right side of the transmission.

On the G-86-21, the cables attach one to each side, and there is a crossover linkage for one cable.

What years are the G86-20, and G86-21?
It was my understanding to get a Boxster S, 2000-2004 for better gearing?

The linkage you have on your trans will work with what this business makes, but only does the 987 cable ends, but makes the shifter for both, 986/987.
http://www.function-first.com/products/eng...-right-solution

Will 987 cables work on the 986.20?
Could put those 987 cable ends on some used 987 cables, but not certain they will work on the 986?
And also note that the 987 5spd cables are different lengths vs the 987 6spd cables.

The G86-21 showed up in 2005. Mine is a 2006 Cayman S trans.

I used the G-86-21 because it did not have the issue with second gear. I didn't do any comparisons on gearing. Although after driving it, I wish the gearing was a little taller across the board. But that is due to tire size not a fault of the transmission.

I can't speak intelligently about the shifter and factory cables. I used Numeric racing shifter cables ( https://numericracing.com/store/cables-986987/ )for the 2006 Cayman S, paired to a custom made shifter. I didn't want a Boxster/Cayman shifter in my car. To me, it doesn't look right. You can see my shifter on this page of my build thread.

The Numeric racing cables had to be slightly modified so they would go into the speedometer cable and shifter rod holes in the firewall. I ground off the flange on the shifter end of the cables and used double nuts once the cable was out the shifter hole in the tunnel.

That is a weight. It is there to make shifting into gear easier. You get the weight moving with the shifter, and the weight's inertia helps to engage the gears.

On the bottom transmission, they went to a small cast iron flywheel. It is the black wheel on the left side of the transmission.

I wonder if those balls that snap on the ends of the cables, are the same size on the 986, and 987?

For some reason he doesn't make the cable ends for the 986, and suggested using the 987 cables, so a person could use the ends. I would assume the 986/987 cables are about the same length, but might have a different spots along where they mount in the mounting brackets on the side of the trans, I presume?

From what Renegade said, the 2000-2004 has the better gearing for the V8?

Do they all have that popping out of gear, or just some for those years?

The popping out of gear thing may be happening to some or many of the G86-20 boxes, but not all of them. I don't believe Tony @Cracker has had any issues with his.
Fingers crossed I got one of the non problematic examples...
