The 31 best foods to try in the Mill Valley (2024)

This old-world british restaurant is a must-see for any traveler in Muir Beach. The Pelican Inn offers warm rooms with a true old-english style, as well as a pub serving British favorites like fish and chips. After dinner, take advantage of the lodge's free breakfast before exploring Muir Beach or the surrounding area.

Quaint isn't a strong enough word! This place manages to capture every charismatic and appealing detail of a traditional British-style pub/inn and deliver them to a location that works so symbiotically with the aesthetic that you might just have to actively convince yourself that you weren't transported to a small fishing village on some rural English shore. The food was absolutely spot on and done very well (had the beef stew with a side of potato gratin, the 'English' dip sandwich and sticky toffee pudding). All items tasted great and, paired with the draft ale and giant genuine wood-burning fireplace, completely sold the feeling of resting and recovering from wet and weary travels! As much a little adventure as it is a great restaurant, I look forward to booking a stay (yes they really have rooms, like a real inn, for real) sometime to get the full experience!

The bar tender is an excellent server. But after you pay for your food there and get your table number, the people serving the food could learn from the bar tender. The food is as good as you would expect for British cuisine. Not exactly worth what you have to pay. But I guess the majority of their patrons are rich enough they don't bat an eye at the price which is why I had to ask for an itemized receipt. The main dining room is mostly lit by candles which can be romantic, but too dark if you have children with you. If you like to dine outside in December you better dress for winter. It was so cold I had to eat my food quickly before it was just as cold. If you are just stopping here for drinks and a snack it can be fun. Unless you are planning on staying here it's not worth dining here.

At first glance, not so impressive, but give it a chance! We stopped in for a quick dinner and at first were under impressed, but when we got our food, we were blown away! Order at counter and they deliver to table. I had a salad with the freshest greens I've experienced, even at a 5-star place. We also had the English dip sandwich (french dip) and it was so good! Friendly and fast service.Tip for business: clean your menus.

Lovely place to stop by to enjoy English beer with a great selection of lunch & dinner menu.If you bring your own blanket, there’s a large well groomed grass lawn that wraps around the property. Perfect to stretch your legs, relax and have a outdoor meal. The waitresses were attentive and busy bringing your order to outside. Need to order your drink and meals at the bar inside first.Muir beach/Mill Valley could get very windy and cold/foggy even in the month of July. Check the weather before head over this costal area. We were very lucky to enjoy our lunch on a warm sunny afternoon after 3 to 4-mile hike to arrive on foot from Mill Valley. It’s one of the institutions in Marin near Muir beach.

Cute little Inn. Great English menu and European tavern feel. Didn't stay in a room, just stopped in for lunch. Pricey, but good food and cool to step back "across the pond" with how the dining experience felt.

Lovely English Pub near Muir Beach! There aren't that many English pubs in the bay that you could truly believe we're in rural England! I loved the architecture of the building and all the furnishings were very fitting. There were lots of great classic pub food options and lots of beers available too. I particularly liked the outdoor area and lawn next to it. Definitely a great place to eat if you are visiting the beach or Muir woods

Highly recommend for food and pub like setting! If you visit Muir Beach, stopping here is a must. Excellent staff and really cool atmosphere. Food is also great.Definitely a British style pub. The fish and chips were quite good! Stop here for food, drinks, and a good time!

The location, setting and feeling of the inn are wonderful. Cute old building (in need of repairs) in walking distance to the beach. However, the management of the facility ruins the fun of it. When we first booked our stay, we were double charged. After multiple calls they refunded us. During our stay (late August, we aren't talking the middle of Feb or anything) it was barely staffed. They microwaved our breakfast and barely had any of the items on the dinner menu. At check out there was no one available that we could find in the building. A few days later we were again charged incorrectly by hundreds of dollars. We tried to contact them multiple times by phone and email with no answer and ended up having to bring it up with our bank. This place has so much potential, but the poor management really ruins it which is a shame.

We celebrated our wedding at Pelican Inn and it was truly perfect! The venue was absolutely beautiful and provided the most intimate setting, exactly what we envisioned. The staff were exceptional, ensuring everything went flawlessly. We couldn't have asked for a more wonderful place to mark our special day. Thank you for making our wedding day unforgettable!

Cozy and quaint, this is a favorite spot for a beer and little something to eat. Atmosphere takes you back to UK, especially on a rainy day. Quick stroll to the beach for a hike or bonfire.Pelican pale ale paired well with beet salad and shepherds pie.

Good food, awful customer service! Worst customer service of my life. After I paid for my meal at the bar with my credit card in the tip section I put 0 because I was planning on leaving a cash tip. The man taking my order, upon viewing my receipt, hands it back to me saying you might want to leave a tip if you want the servers to bring your food. I did not appreciate being called out like that in front of the other patrons and him making it seem like I was not going to leave a tip.

I had the fish and chips with a beer. I had high hopes for the food, but it was bad. The fish was bland with absolutely no flavor. The fries were a mix of what I assume were frozen fries of different sizes and types. The beer was very good.

My husband and I ended up staying here last minute by booking online on their website. Check in was pretty smooth and our room was like something out of a story book. The following morning we enjoyed a complimentary hot breakfast with unlimited freshly brewed coffee. Afterwards we went to our room to enjoy the cute nook area which overlooked the gardens while conversing over our 4th? cup of tasty coffee. However this bliss ended when we checked out. Their system lost our reservation and they began accusing me of never making a reservation. This was followed by a tirade and threats as we tried to leave.Later that day we received a call from the owner explaining the mishap of their reservation system followed by threats of arrest by the sheriff's department. The threats continued the next day with additional comments of calling my associates, family and local police department. Pretty disappointing treatment of former customers. The inn is a beautiful experience but with this experience I hope to never cross the inn ever again!

It's one of my favourite places to go when I'm missing life across the pond. It feels like a proper pub, and the food is perfect; they even have English beers on tap. I've never stayed overnight, so I can not rate that aspect, but it is perfect to stop and have a pint or a meal.

Elizabeth T — Google review

We stopped in for a pint after hiking along the Marin Headlands. We didn't stay to eat or spend the night. With that being said, it's in a nice location. Close to Muir Woods and Muir Beach. Plenty of great hiking right out their front door.

Chris S — Google review

The restaurant is located in an old house, and the downstairs is the main dining area. When you walk in, you'll see servers around, but they'll direct you to the cash register to order your food. After you order, you can find a seat and the food will be brought to you. This setup is a bit unusual, and it may not be to everyone's taste. If you're looking for a more traditional sit-down restaurant where you'll be waited on, this may not be the place for you. However, if you're looking for a unique dining experience with great food, I would definitely recommend checking this place out.

Very good attempt to recreate an English pub. Bar was very small but otherwise nice ambience indoors.Limited menu, but sausage and mash was very good. Pasties were a disappointment, more a cross between a turnover and a samosa, nothing like an English (Cornish) pasty.

Went to the Pelican Inn to celebrate family friends 50 year anniversary. They rented it out for the entire evening and provided us with great car service, such a treat!. Such a beautiful place and got to hangout outside with the fresh crisp air.

Went for lunch a weekday to avoid the weekend crowds. Such a charming spot! Classic English fare with a roaring fire on a foggy day. Couldn't have hoped for anything more.

Having not been there for over 20 years, we recently went back to the Pelican Inn for a drink and a bite to eat. Sadly, while the building and location are both perfection, the hospitality was terrible. There is no one welcoming guests, and customers have to figure out ordering on their own. It is obvious that the people who work there are only doing so because they have to. We ordered our drinks from the server who was “mechanical” at best. After paying $24 for a thimble of wine and a beer (yeah, we expect to pay more for things in a “nice place,” but come on), we sat down and were thinking about what to order (as the only 2 menus in the place are up at the counter). At one point the server was wandering around lighting random candles, but never the one at our table where we were seated. Another server was rushing around delivering plates to the tables, zero customer interaction. The place started getting very busy… and with that level of service, we decided we would go elsewhere for dinner. It seems that the place is owned by someone who owns many other historic type properties, and it shows that this owner has no interest in hospitality. As long as it makes $$, and I’m sure it makes a lot, it doesn’t matter to them. What a shame.

This establishment is adorable. We ordered the fish and chips, shepherd's pie, and beef stew. We recommend adding some salt and pepper to your food for additional flavor. The fish and chips was our favorite. Their ordering system is a little different from what we are traditionally used to. You place your order at the counter and find your own table. Seating is a bit limited especially when it's cold outside.

I feel like this place has gone downhill. The staff is very nice and helpful but the food is average at best. The fries were not real potatoes but fried frozen mush. The goat cheese salad was a few sad watercress stalks with a tiny (partially spoiled) half a beetroot and a tiny bit of goat cheese (at $14 it feels like somebody is making a joke - how small and sad can we make it?) The cider was warm :-( I had to add a lot of ice to make it not taste like warm apple juice. But again, the staff is wonderful and warm and helpful.

My husband and I were hoping to come to the Pelican Inn after getting a rave recommendation. I have consistently been calling for the past 3 weeks at various times of the day with no avail. I’ve left voicemails, emails…and not a single response from them. I would have loved to give this place a shot to celebrate our 1 year wedding anniversary but I guess that won’t be happening.

It was mine and my husband’s first anniversary so I decided to book us a romantic night away at Pelican Inn.The location is great and the restaurant is nice but our room was run down and the management was awful from the moment I booked the place. We were overcharged for our room, after several email exchanges before our visit even started, the person responding to me said they would talk to management and I never heard back from them (after repeatedly following up). When we checked in, a very rude woman who did not even greet us, asked us to sign a paper before handing over our room key and when I took some time to read it, she yelled at me “just sign it!”. I asked her about the room being overcharged and she said she couldn’t help me, I’d have to email the same email address I’d been corresponding with to get help with my inquiry. When I explained to her that was the same email address I wasn’t getting a response from, she blatantly ignored me. The breakfast the next morning was in a cold room and not one of the wait staff greeted us. They set our plates down without saying a word. One of the guys working there questioned us the morning we checked out like we were criminals. Wanted to know if we were staying at the Inn and was asking when we checked in and when we were checking out. Then the guy walked outside and watched us in our car as we tried to find directions to our hike. It was super uncomfortable and very unwelcomingFor the amount of money it costs to stay here, I was pretty disappointed. I would recommend the restaurant but would stay away from the hotel.

Poor customer service. Had to postpone 2 nights for a few weeks due to illness. Was past the 5 day cancellation policy. Wanted to move the dates and try and make the room available for rebooking according to hotel policy. No response to numerous attempts using provided email and website contact. Never had a hotel ignore us before. Strange. Regardless, they did get their full payment and no follow up for a future stay. Do not rely on email or website contact for follow up. Disappointed as location looks fantastic.

Incredible dinner in a dreamscape environment. We got the quails and the beef Wellington. Both were cooked perfectly and with exquisite care. The staff were friendly, relaxed and welcoming, just like they oughta be at a travelers’ inn

Pub review: We stopped by for a quick lunch after playing at the beach and it was delicious! The food was a bit pricey but nothing unusual for a pub, and the beautiful ambience and unique offerings made up for it. I definitely recommend the pear cider and the fish and chips! Lovely little place, especially with the beach so close by.

TLDR: Nice, but be prepared. Would recommend, Maybe stay another time. That said, the following are my scores.Dining and Bar: 4-5/5. The only negative potentially would be if and when it is really busy.Atmosphere: 5/5 Remember though, no cell service. There is Wifi though. It was the first time I had seen a pay phone in I do not know how long. It would be needed there.Lodging: 3-4/5 I would be hard pressed to give any real English Inn lodging higher than a 4. So this would be on par. The biggest negative are the chairs and lack of space.Bottom line: Would I recommend Pelican Inn. Yes. Would we come back again. Maybe, only if we wanted to see Muir Woods again. The Pelican Inn is a small lodging and restaurant set up in the style of an English inn. This review is for both staying and eating.Located immediately off California Hwy 1 at Muir Beach, it is within minutes of Muir Woods Nat'l monument. Traffic noise was not an issue, but might be at times. Both checking in and out are very informal. Similar to an actual English inn, service can seem a bit inconsistent. But remember, you not at a modern hotel. Go with the flow. The set up is lower level and the lawn is like an English pub. Separate bar and dining area. The upstairs are the lodging rooms. The rooms are small with lowered doorways keeping with the English Inn motif. Do not expect lounging about in your room. Sleep yes, lounging no. There is a comfy room called the "Snug" for lodgers next to the bar area. It is where to get comfy. The food prepared for breakfast was ample and some special requests can be fulfilled (Oatmeal instead of full English) Dining for meals is either in a sunny enclosed area, or in a darker dining area. Both are clean and offer their own ambience. The afternoon and evening meals are made to order depending upon what is available that day. Service both in the bar and the dining area was good.

We came here just for the restaurant as we were staying right in San Fran. The food is so delicious and the setting is warm, cozy, and very intimate. The beef Wellington we had was outstanding as well as the au gratin potatoes. We drove about 40 minutes to dine here and we would do it again each time we visit the city.
