Papillion Police Chief Christiaan Whitted gives update at scene of a homicide after a woman was killed on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2023.

A Sarpy County jury found a 48-year-old Papillion man guilty of manslaughter Thursday in the death of his estranged wife in August.

Walter Alexander also was found guilty of two counts of use of a firearm to commit a felony, terroristic threats, obstructing a peace officer and operating a vehicle to avoid arrest in connection with the killing of 37-year-old Brittany Alexander on Aug. 26, 2023, at a home at 735 Madison St. in Papillion. Papillion police said Brittany Alexander was shot.

The jury opted to find Alexander guilty of manslaughter rather than second-degree murder, according to court records. The jury deliberated for two days, according to a press release from the Sarpy County Attorney’s Office.

During the trial’s opening arguments last week, Deputy Sarpy County Attorney Ben Perlman alleged Walter Alexander was standing with a gun at close range to Brittany Alexander when she was shot.

Police arrested Walter Alexander around 84th and Harrison Streets after he was reportedly seen leaving the area of the residence in a Mercedes-Benz sedan. Perlman said Walter Alexander did not shed a tear over his wife’s killing when informed and questioned by police and he did not wonder about the nature of her death.

Prior to the trial, he was found guilty of leaving the scene of a property damage crash and refusal to submit to a preliminary breath test, according to the release.

He is scheduled for sentencing on Aug. 19.
