Yeah I can see the bad association there.

He was joking around saying "Why couldn't he be a slave for 9 years or 14 years. Why 12??" :)

After 96 reviews this is at 100% on RT. On Metacrtitic it is at an astonishing 99.
I have seen only a single bad review of this film....and who do you think it is by?
I despise this critic so much that I won't even mention his name but here is a sample from his review:
...the cultural media have responded on cue: Praising the deliberately mundane Boyhood fits the pattern unconsciously followed by most culture writers (who also tend to be white males) seeking to confirm their own privilege and importance — but without examining it.

This looks like it could be a Best Picture contender. I hope it is remembered and Linklater is finally recognized.

If IFC has the money to market it, it would be an amazing Picture nominee.

Looking forward to this. I thought it might be on demand, but apparently not.
I always enjoy Linklater's work.

Ugh. I don't want to go to the Suncoast. :hairpull:
I think the only two movies I've seen there in the past few years were The Lords of Salem and The Spectacular Now.

I think it's interesting how much of it boils down to marketing $$. I thought Before Midnight was the best picture of the year for 2013, but it seemed all but forgotten when awards season rolled around ,save a Golden Globe nom. for Julie Delpy.

Re: Boyhood - Filmed over a 12 year span (D: Linklater, S: Hawke, P. Arquette)
just got out of this wonderful viewing experience! Ethan Hawke and the lead boy delivered beautiful chemistry, and the film was as uplifting as it was honestly heartbreaking at times. Linklater knows how to speak to his audience, and the fact that this spanned roughly 12 years shows his enduring consistency without missing a step. My only complaints were some sh*tty soundtrack choices within the first 15 minutes or so (which understandably show a time-stamp of the late 90's i guess), a few heavy-handed, cheesy dramatic moments, and...

Re: Boyhood - Filmed over a 12 year span (D: Linklater, S: Hawke, P. Arquette)
I just saw this movie earlier today. I thought it was incredible and really resonated with me after. It's a very simple story (the coming of age of a boy) and there isn't much "plot" but it just works so well. The chemistry among the four main actors is very natural. Mason (the boy) lives a relatively normal life but it's still compelling to watch. All credit to Linklater for making this very difficult concept work.
The "gimmick" of this film of course is that it took 12 years to film and everyone ages accordingly during the movie. No CGI or prosthetics here! Seeing Mason gradually age from 6 to 18 is one of the greatest "visual effects" I've ever seen.

Now if only the "Before" trilogy gets a Criterion release my life would be complete. Also, I will definitely see Boyhood before the Criterion release, but if I hadn't, I would blind buy it in a heartbeat. Richard Linklater just doesn't get the recognition he deserves. I'm still holding out hope his Dazed and Confused spiritual sequel "That's What I'm Talking About" gets funding. I'd drop a couple hundred bucks for a kickstarter fund without hesitation.

At this point, it'd be nice if they'd do Blu releases of the first two at all.

Like most have said, great movie and the transitions between everyone's age was very smooth. I saw the finale of Louie the night before I saw this, and kept getting confused between sub characters and plots when thinking about the movie lol.

Re: Boyhood - Filmed over a 12 year span (D: Linklater, S: Hawke, P. Arquette)
My wife and I saw this today in Minneapolis and we both really liked it. I had no idea it was close to three hours and it flew by, really. There are some tough scenes to watch and some touching ones, too. Good sprinkling of humor throughout and the "gimmick" just plain works, but it does something more. Good films make us reflect on life, yeah. But I don't know how many people will be able to watch this film and not take stock of their lives, their journey, how they were raised, how their parents were probably raised, and if one has children, how he or she is raising/raised children. We ended up doing quite a bit of reflection today together, thanks to this film, and it has really stuck with me all night. Part of me isn't sure if I would see it again, that being caught up in Mason's journey the first time through is what made it so captivating. We'll have to see what happens when Criterion releases a Blu-ray.
A few thoughts on content that surprised me:
