The sport's blue-blood programs distanced themselves from the pack, but a few surprise teams are still in the hunt.

With offseason camps and showcases largely complete, the top prospects in the 2025 college football recruiting class distinguished themselves from their peers and climbed up the rankings in Wednesday's Top247 update. Fast-rising quarterback Keelon Russell was one of the biggest movers in the new rankings, and in turn, Alabama solidified its spot in the race for the national recruiting title.
Shake-ups to the Top247 triggered movement in the team rankings, as well. There is a clear divide between the most elite classes and those further behind in the pecking order, and while there is still plenty of time for programs to climb closer to the top, schools like Ohio State and Georgia are in a class of their own as premier destinations.
The vast majority of programs inside the top 10 are perennial College Football Playoff and national championship contenders, but there are a handful of surprise teams not far behind who could shake things up.

Here are the 247Sports team recruiting rankings after the latest Top247 update:
25. UCF Knights (208.25 Points)
24. USC Trojans (208.57)
23. Florida State Seminoles (210.99)
Florida State got off to a slow start in the 2025 cycle but is now among the teams with the most recruiting momentum. The Seminoles are up nearly 15 spots in the rankings this month alone after they cracked double-digit commitments with the addition of four-star interior offensive lineman Peyton Joseph, a July 4 commit. Mike Norvell's program passed Georgia Tech to stand at No. 4 in the ACC rankings and is on its way to again contending with Clemson and Miami for the conference recruiting crown.
22. Texas Longhorns (218.33)
21. Wisconsin Badgers (218.84)
20. SMU Mustangs (218.97)
If Luke Fickell — a proven winner who already has a College Football Playoff appearance under his belt — loads up on impact talent at Wisconsin, the Badgers could become a serious force in the expanded Big Ten. That is the way things are trending this offseason with Fickell compiling a top-25 class. Each of the top three players in the Badgers' class committed since June 1 with blue-chip prospects in linebacker Mason Posa, offensive tackle Logan Powell and interior offensive lineman Hardy Watts leading the way.
19. Kentucky Wildcats (219.46)
18. TCU Horned Frogs (219.52)
17. Washington Huskies (219.73)
Washington was more of a middle-of-the-road recruiting operation under Kalen DeBoer but is on a surge early in the Jedd Fisch era. The last month saw four Top247 prospects commit to the reigning national runner-up, including class headliner Zaydrius Rainey-Sale, who announced his pledge to the Huskies as a local in-state product. Keeping the top players in the Pacific Northwest close to home is something UW struggled with at times under previous regimes.
16. Rutgers Scarlet Knights (225.04)
15. Tennessee Volunteers (236.12)
14. Clemson Tigers (236.28)
Tennessee was one of the biggest winners from Wednesday's Top247 update as two of the nine newcomers to the blue-chip tier are Volunteers commits. Mariyon Dye debuts at No. 110 overall in the new rankings, while Jayden Loftin checks in at No. 203 to give Josh Heupel a pair of fast-rising edge rushers. Backfilling that position with high-upside talent is critical for Tennessee, which is set to lose potential No. 1 overall pick James Pearce Jr. next offseason to the NFL.
13. Missouri Tigers (236.98)
12. Auburn Tigers (239.23)
11. Michigan Wolverines (240.68)
Michigan was a steep riser in the recruiting rankings last month and continued its climb toward the top 10 when first-year coach Sherrone Moore picked up two top-100 commits in one day. July 8 was a big one for the Wolverines as class headliner and No. 2 cornerback Ivan Taylor picked the program and No. 4 tight end Andrew Olesh announced his pledge to the Maize and Blue. If Moore continues to acquire talent at this rate, he could have the program back in the playoff in no time.
10. MIAMI HURRICANES (244.48)
Class Summary: 17 Commits | No. 1 ACC | 90.87 Avg. Rating
Headliner: 4-Star IOL Seuseu Alofaituli
There are few head coaches in college football with the recruiting acumen of Mario Cristobal, who loaded up on impact talent over his first two seasons at Miami. If this proves to be a breakthrough campaign for the Hurricanes, he will have even more to sell to his targets. Even without high-end results on the field, Cristobal continues to build some of the nation's top classes, and he already has another top-10 haul in the works. The July 4 weekend was a boon to the Hurricanes, who picked up a new class headliner in interior offensive lineman Seuseu Alofaituli and a top-100 athlete in Hylton Stubbs.
9. PENN STATE NITTANY LIONS (245.44)
Class Summary: 22 Commits | No. 3 Big Ten | 89.89 Avg. Rating
Headliner: 4-Star CB Daryus Dixson
There is a serious arms race at the top of the Big Ten amid conference realignment, and Penn State is right in that mix with Ohio State, Oregon and Michigan. The Nittany Lions rank third in that group during the 2025 cycle and could inch closer to the top if they pick up a five-star commit. As it stands entering mid-July, Penn State's highest-ranked commit stands outside the top 100 nationally. The class is deep, though, and features blue-chip standouts at the cornerback and edge spots — two of the program's strongest positions under James Franklin.
8. OKLAHOMA SOONERS (256.86)
Class Summary: 21 Commits | No. 5 SEC | 90.70 Avg. Rating
Headliner: 4-Star Edge CJ Nickson
Oklahoma long recruited at an SEC level and is off to a hot start ahead of its first year in the league. Brent Venables can now sell the Sooners' new conference to prospects, which should help further entrench his program in the sport's top talent acquisition tier. OU is outrecruiting fellow SEC newcomer and bitter rival Texas midway through the year but likely needs to add a five-star prospect to its list before it can contend with the likes of Alabama and Georgia atop the league.
7. TEXAS A&M AGGIES (257.50)
Class Summary: 18 Commits | No. 4 SEC | 91.49 Avg. Rating
Headliner: 5-Star QB Husan Longstreet
Mike Elko has the second highest-ranked class among first-year head coaches and picked up where Jimbo Fisher left off in drawing elite talent to . There are four top-100 players in his 2025 haul — five-star quarterback and Elite 11 finalist Husan Longstreet, cornerback Adonyss Currie, defensive lineman Kiotti Armstrong and athlete Noah Mikhail. The Aggies are set up to compete with the SEC's best right out of the gate under Elko's direction, and they are already in elite company on the recruiting trail, too.
6. LSU TIGERS (260.48)
Class Summary: 15 Commits | No. 3 SEC | 93.64 Avg. Rating
Headliner: 5-Star QB Bryce Underwood
Even with spring and summer decommitments from top-ranked wide receiver Dakorien Moore and Top247 cornerback Jaboree Antoine, LSU still stands firmly inside the top 10 with its star-studded 2025 class. Brian Kelly had the strongest start of any coach on the trail this year and held onto his two highest-ranked commits in No. 1 overall prospect Bryce Underwood and prized running back Harlem Berry. Replacing Moore with another high-end receiver would go a long way in rounding out this group, which features much-needed help on the defensive front.
5. OREGON DUCKS (264.03)
Class Summary: 16 Commits | No. 2 Big Ten | 93.88 Avg. Rating
Headliner: 5-Star WR Dakorien Moore
Slow starts only mean so much in recruiting, and Oregon is a prime example of that fact as the Ducks quickly skyrocketed up the rankings all the way to the top five after a terrific run through the summer months. Dan Lanning earned a marquee July 4 commitment from the top-ranked receiver in the 2025 class, Dakorien Moore, to secure his first five-star prospect in the haul. Lanning's staff is relentless on the recruiting trail and is back on pace for another historic cycle.
4. NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH (265.23)
Class Summary: 21 Commits | No. 1 FBS Independents | 91.05 Avg. Rating
Headliner: 4-Star QB Deuce Knight
That Notre Dame has a top-five class without a single five-star commit on its ledger is a tremendous feat. It is a product of the Fighting Irish's class depth, as nine of their 21 commits hold four stars. That group includes quarterback Deuce Knight, who was a big riser in the Top247 update and moved from No. 66 overall to No. 34 — just shy of a fifth star. Marcus Freeman has a blue-chip commit at seven different positions and is en route to his best class as a head coach.
3. GEORGIA BULLDOGS (281.43)
Class Summary: 19 Commits | No. 2 SEC | 93.14 Avg. Rating
Headliner: 5-Star LB Zayden Walker
Georgia is a force to be reckoned with every single year both in recruiting and on-field competition during the Kirby Smart era, and the Bulldogs are not slowing down this summer. Their pursuit of a second-straight recruiting crown includes commitments already from three five-star prospects. Two of them pledged to the program last month: No. 2 linebacker Zayden Walker and top-ranked edge rusher Isaiah Gibson. No. 1 tight end Elyiss Williams rounds out that group and strengthens the Bulldogs' grasp on elite talent at his position.
2. ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE (291.53)
Class Summary: 20 Commits | No. 1 SEC | 94.19 Avg. Rating
Headliner: 5-Star QB Keelon Russell
Any concern about Alabama's recruiting prowess amid its transition away from the Nick Saban era quickly dissolved when Kalen DeBoer picked up steam. The first-year Crimson Tide coach is a proven winner who turned Washington into an NFL pipeline in just two seasons, and he already has a monster recruiting class in Tuscaloosa well ahead of his first game with the program. Elite 11 Finals MVP Keelon Russell is the most notable riser in the July Top247 update as he picked up a fifth star and now stands atop the No. 2-ranked Alabama class.
1. OHIO STATE BUCKEYES (309.94)
Class Summary: 23 Commits | No. 1 Big Ten | 93.89 Avg. Rating
Headliner: 5-Star QB Tavien St. Clair
For all of its dominance on the field and on the recruiting trail, Ohio State has yet to compile a top-ranked class in the 247Sports era. That could change this year. Ryan Day is perhaps the most successful coach this offseason in talent acquisition and retention as he not only kept much of his roster intact but also attracted some of the top transfer portal talent and has the No. 1 recruiting class midway through the 2025 cycle. No. 2 quarterback Tavien St. Clair and cornerbacks Devin Sanchez and Na'eem Offord are all top-10 overall prospects, and St. Clair closed the gap on LSU commit Bryce Underwood for top billing.
